Antecedent-Behavior-Consequence (ABC) is a significant component of understanding the function of behavior. If a child is in ABA therapy or a therapeutic preschool program for additional behavioral support, their teachers and therapists will often examine these components of behavior.
¿Qué significa exactamente ABC?
Antecedente: Se refiere al estímulo o actividad que se produce justo antes de que el niño muestre el comportamiento. En algunos casos, el antecedente es también la causa principal del comportamiento del niño.
Comportamiento: Se refiere a la conducta que sigue al antecedente.
Consecuencia: Se refiere al acontecimiento o consecuencia que sigue al comportamiento.
Al observar un comportamiento en una cadena lógica de progresión, es más fácil determinar la función de un comportamiento y comprender mejor por qué un niño actúa de una manera determinada.
He aquí un ejemplo de utilización del ABC para comprender el comportamiento de un niño:
Antecedente: El profesor de preescolar terapéutico pide al alumno que se acerque a la alfombra para la hora del círculo.
Comportamiento: El niño no se mueve y empieza a llorar diciendo que no quiere unirse al círculo.
Consecuencia: El auxiliar de preescolar terapéutico se queda con el niño para intentar ayudarle a regular su comportamiento.

Los terapeutas de ABA suelen utilizar gráficos ABC para trazar conductas específicas y examinar la función del comportamiento en los niños. Al observar el ciclo completo de un comportamiento, desde el estímulo que lo incita hasta la consecuencia, el terapeuta o el profesor tiene una mayor comprensión de los patrones de comportamiento del niño. La visión que proporciona un gráfico ABC también ayuda a crear un plan de tratamiento integral.
Why is ABC important?
If a child is exhibiting problematic behaviors at home or in their therapeutic preschool program, it is critical to understand the function of the behavior, in order to resolve it. Every child has their own way of learning and processing information, so two children who are crying during their therapeutic preschool class may be doing so for two completely different reasons. In order to solve the behavior “puzzle,” an ABA therapist or therapeutic preschool teacher may use ABC charts.
ABC is particularly important in the context of applied behavior analysis or ABA therapy services provided in a therapeutic preschool program. Using this method of intervention, the teacher or therapist will work with the child to build positive behaviors and skills and resolve problematic behaviors. ABA also looks at the function of behavior.
