Routines are considered a sequenced schedule that are regularly structured, organized, and followed. Routines are beneficial in early development since it gives children a sense of certainty, security, and helps them develop self- discipline. It also helps children understand time, establishes important habits, and strengthens relationships. Routines can be fun, exciting, and do not have to be a record player on repeat. Incorporating different themes and activities in designated time frames can add variation.
Children, just like adults, handle things best when it is expected and occurs in the context of a familiar routine. The unknown can be unpredictable, intimidating, and make the child uncomfortable. A predictable routine allows children to feel protected and gives them an opportunity to develop a sense of mastery in handling their lives. Children typically provide positive feedback when given a chance to take charge of their own activities and demonstrate some independence. Kids who feel in charge of themselves and do not need constant reminders are less likely to rebel and be oppositional. At CST Academy, we acknowledge and praise children regularly for being the creative, smart, and loving individuals that they are. We follow a routine that will expand and challenge their knowledge and ability on a regular basis. Our routine always gives children a chance to learn the concept of “looking forward” to things they enjoy since it is typical to have preferences of activities.
At CST Academy, the children experience daily routines that consist of hello/goodbye, free play, circle time, snack, gross motor, music, art, and book time. Every week there is a new theme that the activities incorporate. Children learn to adjust fairly quickly to the expectations and routines of their time during CST Academy. Children also get multiple opportunities throughout the academy day to strengthen their transitioning skills. Children have improved dramatically due to incorporating routines since it establishes boundaries and guidelines, as well as teaches good habits and improves efficiency. While routines are helpful, it is important to incorporate the needs of the child always and accommodate when necessary based on individual necessities.
